# Cloud Marketplace Test Purchases Before Launch

AWS, Microsoft and Google Cloud all let you buy your own listing before launch, and each one bills that test differently. Here is which account buys, what keeps the charge down, what Fours does on each cloud, a five-step test script and the clean-up list.

_A cloud marketplace test purchase is a purchase of your own listing before it is public, made through the cloud’s real purchase flow from an account allowed to see the unpublished version. AWS, Microsoft and Google Cloud each document how to run one, and each limits what the test costs in a different way._

* * *

Acme’s engineering lead has a week before three SaaS listings go public. The AWS listing sits in Limited, the Microsoft offer is waiting at publisher sign-off, and Google has just approved the pricing in Producer Portal. Each cloud lets Acme buy its own product before any buyer can, and each will bill for it if the test runs the wrong way: from the seller’s own account, at the real price, or with a test plan left where customers can buy it.

This post puts each cloud’s rules side by side, then covers what Fours does on each cloud, a five-step test script and the clean-up list. The test purchase is the last step before a listing goes public; what a listing needs before this point is in [the marketplace listing readiness checklist](/resources/blog/marketplace-listing-readiness-checklist/).

## What is a cloud marketplace test purchase?

**A cloud marketplace test purchase is a purchase of your own unpublished listing, run through the cloud’s real purchase flow to prove that subscribing, provisioning, metering and cancelling work before buyers try them.** All three providers describe one:

- **AWS** recommends that you “subscribe to your own product to evaluate and confirm the customer experience,” which lets you review the product information, examine the purchase options, “Process test payments” and verify the links to your website.
- **Microsoft** says: “To validate the end-to-end purchase and setup flow, purchase your offer while it is in Preview.”
- **Google Cloud** says that once your pricing is approved, “you can use this preview Cloud Marketplace product page to test the user experience of purchasing your offered plans.”

None of them is a sandbox. Each purchase goes through the cloud’s billing, and what keeps it from becoming a real charge differs: a reduced price on AWS, a low test price and a support ticket on Microsoft, and a Test Billing Account on Google Cloud.

## How do test purchases compare on AWS, Microsoft and Google Cloud?

**Each cloud lets you buy your own listing before launch, but from a different kind of account, under a different price rule, and with a different clean-up.** The rows are each provider’s rules, in its own words where the wording matters.

AWS Marketplace

Microsoft Marketplace

Google Cloud Marketplace

**Where you buy**

The Limited listing, “only accessible to your account and whoever you have allowlisted”

The preview: on an offer sold through Microsoft, only the preview audience “can purchase and access the offer for testing”

The staged preview product page that Producer Portal generates

**Who buys**

A different AWS account, allowlisted on the listing: AWS “prevents sellers from buying their own products”

A preview audience member: one to 10 Microsoft account (MSA) or Microsoft Entra ID addresses, or up to 20 from a CSV file

A Cloud Billing account added as a Test Billing Account; a reseller billing account can’t be one

**What keeps the cost down**

The product “must remain at a reduced price” while you and Seller Operations test

Zero or low test prices, such as $0.01, and a support ticket before you buy

The Test Billing Account “has 100% discounted usage”; Google Cloud infrastructure is still billed

**When you can buy**

Once the product is Limited

At publisher sign-off, when the preview links appear under Go live

”After your new Pricing details are approved by Google”

**The catch**

The seller account can’t buy at all

”Purchases made in Preview are processed,” at the plan’s price

Only “one currently-active purchase of a product per account”

**Clean-up**

Cancel a pay-as-you-go subscription before going Public; cancel a contract through a Seller Operations support ticket

Cancel the subscription, stop distribution of the test plan, and “Never publish a test plan live”

Stop usage reports, cancel the test entitlements, and remove Google team members from the billing account

## How do you run a test purchase on AWS Marketplace?

**Subscribe from a second AWS account allowlisted on the Limited listing, with every price still at the reduced test price: AWS “prevents sellers from buying their own products,” and asks for the actual price only when you request public visibility.** What to check on the registration page as the buyer is in [the AWS Marketplace SaaS registration page checklist](/resources/blog/aws-marketplace-saas-registration-page/), and why $0.01 is a test price, not a way to hide pricing, is in [listing on a marketplace without public pricing](/resources/blog/marketplace-listing-without-public-pricing/).

Fours’ AWS listing guide leaves every price at $0.01 while the listing is Limited, because “If you enter a real price (like $1,200) at this stage, that test purchase will generate a real charge for that exact amount.” Add the test account under **More actions → Manage Allowlisted Accounts**, select **Do not automatically renew this contract**, subscribe, and choose **Set Up Your Account**, which should land on your signup page or the Fours-hosted signup form. The product’s **Entitlements** tab in the Fours Console should then show an active entitlement; one marked cancelled usually means a payment failure on the test account. A usage-priced product also needs one test usage record, which the guide reports as a quantity of 1 on the $0.01 test dimension.

## How do you test-buy a Microsoft Marketplace offer in Preview?

**Buy the test plan from the preview link as a member of the preview audience, after you open a support ticket with Microsoft.** Microsoft’s review-and-publish page sets the rule: “To validate the end-to-end purchase and setup flow, purchase your offer while it is in Preview. First notify Microsoft with a support ticket to ensure we don’t process a charge.”

**Put the test plan where customers can’t buy it.** Microsoft recommends “a test SaaS plan in a separate test and development (DEV) offer.” If you test in the production offer instead, create the test plan “as a private plan and specify a preview audience.” Either way: “Never publish a test plan live.” A DEV offer also keeps clutter out of the production offer, because a plan you create for testing can’t be deleted without a support ticket. On the DEV offer, Microsoft says to select No partners in the CSP program, and its preview-audience page shows why that matters: “Previews aren’t supported by offers configured to be available to the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program.”

**Keep the price low, because the purchase is real.** “When you purchase the plan, you’re charged the prices defined in the plan,” and “Purchases made in Preview are processed for both DEV and PROD offers. If an offer has a $100/mo price, your company is charged $100.” Microsoft’s DEV-offer guidance gives test plans “zero or low prices,” such as $0.01, and keeps $50.00 to $100.00 for testing payout. If a charge does go through, a support ticket gets you a payout for the full amount with no store service fee, and “To avoid being charged a store service fee on your test, open a support ticket within seven days of the test purchase.” You still pay the invoices for test purchases; a purchase cancelled within 72 hours is refunded as a credit on the next month’s invoice.

**Know who can buy.** The preview audience takes Microsoft account (MSA) or Microsoft Entra ID addresses, one to 10 entered by hand or up to 20 imported from a CSV file, and its members test in their Default Directory. Microsoft notes that an Entra user principal name can differ from the user’s email address, so enter the principal name. If the test tenant uses an Azure private marketplace, enable the test offer there first, or the purchase is blocked. The preview audience isn’t for prospects either: “Do not use the preview audience to give people outside your organization visibility into an offer. Use the Private Offer option instead.”

**In Fours,** the Preview Audience is a required field when you create the Microsoft listing, with up to 10 entries. The offer’s landing page and connection webhook point at Fours, so after the preview purchase the buyer reaches Fours first. Per Fours’ Microsoft listing guide, Fours “securely validates the purchase and creates an entitlement in your console,” then redirects to your signup URL with `sugerEntitlementId` and `partner=azure`, which your service must store with the account the buyer creates. Check both ends: the entitlement in the Fours Console, and the ID saved in your app.

## How do you test-buy a Google Cloud Marketplace product?

**Buy it from the preview product page with a Test Billing Account, which “has 100% discounted usage,” after Google has approved your pricing.** Google’s testing pages set out the rest:

- **Set up the Test Billing Account first.** You add a Cloud Billing account on the Test Billing Accounts page, and it then works as a Test Billing Account “across all of your Cloud Marketplace products.” A reseller billing account can’t be one, and “you still incur charges for your usage of Google Cloud infrastructure.” It stays in processing until one of your products has completed the Pricing review.
- **Buy from the staged preview.** In Producer Portal, **PREVIEW** opens “a staged preview version” of your product page. Purchases from it work “After your new Pricing details are approved by Google,” and a change to approved pricing “might take up to four business days” to approve.
- **Test one plan at a time.** “You can only have one currently-active purchase of a product per account,” so cancel the previous order before you buy the next plan. On a subscription plan, verify that auto-renewal turns off and on.
- **Run the usage test for six hours.** With the Test Billing Account, buy the product and send a first usage report “for a single, recognizable metric,” worth more than US$0.01 and less than an hour’s expected usage. Then send at least one report an hour for at least six hours, log what you send in Google Sheets or CSV, and give the log to your Cloud Marketplace partner engineering team. Google compares it with the Customer incremental insights report, which you have to turn on first, and sends you the result.
- **Check the sign-up.** Google sends the buyer to your sign-up page with a JWT in the `x-gcp-marketplace-token` parameter, and “After verifying the JWT, your sign up page must send an account approval request to the Partner Procurement API.” With Fours, the sign-up URL points at Fours, which redirects to your signup URL with `sugerEntitlementId` and `partner=gcp`.

**Fours’ Google Cloud sequence is separate from the Test Billing Account.** Fours’ Google Cloud listing guide sets a two-part billing test, then the launch itself:

1. **The internal billing test.** Once technical and frontend integration is done in Producer Portal, tell your Fours Customer Success Manager. The Fours team runs the internal test and authorizes a test purchase.
2. **The Google billing test.** Open a support ticket with GCP Marketplace Support, say the internal test is complete, and request a billing account ID for the external Google Billing Test. Give the ID to your Fours representative, who runs the external test for you.
3. **A usage record**, for usage-based or metered pricing, submitted to Google before the listing becomes public.
4. **The go-live script.** Google provides it and your cloud admin runs it, because Fours doesn’t have permission to trigger it in your GCP project.

Keep the two apart: the Test Billing Account is yours, for testing purchases and usage in Producer Portal, while the billing account ID in step 2 comes from GCP Marketplace Support, for Google’s billing test.

## What should a test script cover on each cloud?

**Five steps on every cloud: subscribe, provision, meter, change and cancel, each checked against what that cloud documents.** Run them in order on a test plan, and record what each one produced.

Step

AWS Marketplace

Microsoft Marketplace

Google Cloud Marketplace

**1\. Subscribe**

From the allowlisted account, with auto-renewal off and only $0.01 dimensions selected

From the preview link, on the test plan, after the support ticket; then Configure your account

From the preview product page, with the Test Billing Account; auto-renewal turns off and on

**2\. Provision**

Set Up Your Account reaches your page or the Fours-hosted form, the confirmation email arrives, and Fours shows an active entitlement

Fours shows the entitlement, your signup URL receives `sugerEntitlementId`, and the pending subscription is activated

Your page receives the sign-up, through Fours with `sugerEntitlementId` or directly with a JWT it verifies before the account approval request

**3\. Meter**

One $0.01 test usage record, and costs on the test account’s bill that match what you expect

More usage than the base fee covers, with only the overage in Partner Center’s metered usage report, which can take up to 48 hours

Hourly usage reports for at least six hours, logged and compared by Google against its insights report

**4\. Change**

Successful, failed and cancelled subscriptions, and an invalid customer ID, each handled

A plan or quantity change, which reaches the connection webhook as ChangePlan or ChangeQuantity and is auto-accepted if nothing replies within 10 seconds

Cancel the first order, then buy a different plan

**5\. Cancel**

Unsubscribe-pending and unsubscribe-success handled, with final metering records sent within an hour of unsubscribe-pending

The subscription cancelled through the Cancel Subscription API, which returns 202 Accepted

Usage reports stopped and every test entitlement cancelled

## What do you clean up before the listing goes public?

**Cancel every test subscription, retire every test plan and replace every test price, in the order each cloud asks.** A test subscription left running keeps billing, and a test plan left visible is one a customer can buy.

**AWS Marketplace**

- Cancel a pay-as-you-go test subscription before you change the product’s visibility from Limited to Public. For a contract, AWS says to “contact the AWS Marketplace Seller Operations team by submitting a support ticket.”
- Replace the test prices. AWS asks for “the product’s actual price when you request public visibility,” and Seller Operations “will review your product and update the price before the visibility can be updated to Public.” In Fours, that’s the Publish Product step, where the $0.01 prices give way to your retail prices.

**Microsoft Marketplace**

- Cancel the test subscription through the Cancel Subscription API. A purchase cancelled within 72 hours is refunded as a credit on the next month’s invoice.
- Open the support ticket within seven days of the purchase, if you haven’t already, to avoid the store service fee.
- Create the production plan with your real prices and publish that one. Then stop distribution of the test plan; if it’s the offer’s only plan, create another plan first.

**Google Cloud Marketplace**

- Stop sending usage reports for the test entitlements, and cancel every one of them.
- Remove any Google team members you added to your Cloud Billing account during testing.
- With Fours, the last step is the go-live script, which your cloud admin runs.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you buy your own listing on AWS Marketplace?

Not from the seller account. AWS “prevents sellers from buying their own products,” so subscribe from a different AWS account that you allowlist on the Limited listing. Keep the product at its reduced test price until you request public visibility.

### Are purchases in Microsoft Marketplace Preview free?

No. Microsoft processes them at the plan’s price. Its review page says to notify Microsoft with a support ticket before you buy, “to ensure we don’t process a charge,” and its DEV-offer guidance recommends zero or low test prices, such as $0.01.

### What is a Google Cloud Marketplace Test Billing Account?

A Cloud Billing account you register as a Test Billing Account, which “has 100% discounted usage” of your Cloud Marketplace products. It applies across all your products, can’t be a reseller billing account, and still pays for the Google Cloud infrastructure you use.

### Why can’t you buy a second plan while testing on Google Cloud?

Google allows only “one currently-active purchase of a product per account.” To test another plan, cancel the previous order, then buy the next plan from the preview product page. On a subscription plan, also check that auto-renewal turns off and on.

### When do you cancel a test purchase?

On AWS, before you change the listing from Limited to Public: a pay-as-you-go subscription yourself, a contract through a Seller Operations support ticket. On Microsoft, cancel the subscription and stop distribution of the test plan. On Google Cloud, cancel every test entitlement after Google verifies your usage.

### What does Fours do in a test purchase?

On AWS, the test purchase should show an active entitlement in Fours. On Microsoft, Fours validates the preview purchase, creates the entitlement and redirects to your signup URL with a sugerEntitlementId. On Google Cloud, the Fours team runs the internal billing test and the external Google billing test.

## Takeaways

- A test purchase isn’t a sandbox on any of the three clouds: each one runs through real billing, and each keeps the cost down its own way.
- On AWS, buy from a second, allowlisted account at the reduced test price, and cancel the subscription before the listing goes Public.
- On Microsoft, put the test plan in a DEV offer or a private plan, open a support ticket before you buy in Preview, and never publish the test plan live.
- On Google Cloud, use a Test Billing Account after pricing approval, test one plan at a time, and run the usage test for at least six hours.
- With Fours, check the entitlement after the AWS and Microsoft purchases; on Google Cloud, the Fours team runs the billing tests and your cloud admin runs the go-live script.

With Fours, the AWS and Microsoft test purchases run through the same fulfillment path a buyer’s will, and the entitlement each one creates shows in the Fours Console; on Google Cloud, the Fours team runs the billing tests with you. See how a listing is built and published in [cloud marketplace product listing management with Fours](/platform/product-listing/).
